Lynchburg Knee Osteoarthritis and Quality of Life with a Mediterranean Diet

What do stiff, noisy, cracking knees and olive oil, fruits, veggies and red wine have in common? Knee osteoarthritis! Lynchburg knee pain sufferers undergo the morning routine with “bad” knees, the stiffness and pain that comes with waking up and moving. Palmer Chiropractic Center hears our Lynchburg chiropractic patients bemoan this all the time. Those Lynchburg knee pain sufferers would be pleased to get some relief. What is one way to get some relief? The Mediterranean diet that requires, of all things, eating. Palmer Chiropractic Center wonders “How bad can eating be for Lynchburg knee pain relief?”

Lynchburg OSTEOARTHRITIS SUFFERERS AND THEIR PAIN

Lynchburg knee osteoarthritis is ordinary. There are numerous Lynchburg knee pain sufferers. They are not alone! 240 million people around the world suffer with osteoarthritis. That affects about 10% of men and 18% of women. (1) Any Lynchburg knee osteoarthritis sufferer knows about the knee pain, the morning stiffness, and the creaky joint motion that lessens the enjoyment of daily life. (1) It’s just not much fun. Now a Mediterranean diet has potential to be fun though!

WHAT TO EAT ON A MEDITERRANEAN DIET

The Mediterranean diet includes eating lots of fruits and vegetable, legumes and nuts, cereals and seeds, seafood and fish. The Mediterranean diet permits moderate consumption of dairy, poultry and eggs along with red wine and olive oil as the central source of dietary lipids. (1) Yum! Eating a Mediterranean diet can be very delicious and exciting for a recent Mediterranean diet adherent.

BENEFITS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET

Knee osteoarthritis involves inflammation as well as pain. An analysis of three research reports highlights that biomarkers of inflammation and cartilage degradation due to osteoarthritis decreased in the Mediterranean diet group. (1) Specifically, the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1α decreased in the Mediterranean diet group. (2) Knee osteoarthritis patients who stuck to a Mediterranean diet have lessened risk of deteriorating knee pain at four years follow up. For those who didn’t experience knee osteoarthritis at the start of the 4 years study and followed a Mediterranean diet, a 9% lowered risk of getting knee osteoarthritis was reported. (3) Overall, a higher faithfulness to a Mediterranean diet is affiliated with better quality of life and decreased pain, disability and depressive symptoms. (4)
